Presence and the Art of Stillness

'What does Stillness feel like?' I pondered as I sat atop the incredible expanse of the mountain, Mount Shasta in Northern California.

A cool breeze picked up just as the sun was setting leaving coloured streaks of orange and crimson hues across the sky.

It took a while to sink into this breathtaking beauty. Granted that I had just come from a bustling city full of every imaginable sound from dawn to dusk, I felt that my body still ached with the remnants of this chaotic and hectic busyness.

“This mountain was embodied stillness in its entirety.

I fidgeted and flinched, restless in my body, my breath, my mind...

I watched the sky swarm with colours and smiled at this incredible majesty before me yet my mind still felt occupied.

Busy of a thousand things not yet done on my to do list, busy with conversations not finished and thoughts left undone ..  I felt unhinged and unhemmed, a fray piece of cloth not yet completed. But did this all really matter?

I was aware of these feelings as the sunset passed on and descended behind the mountain.

And then ever so slowly my body started to release and relax.

Whatever was behind me, what lay ahead of me held no importance as I started sinking into the present moment.

The present moment of stillness. I focused on the rise and fall of my chest  The sounds of the birds around me and I even focused on the silence that permeated every corner of this formidable mountain.

“In that moment I learnt that stillness doesn’t come easy for most human beings. It takes time, patience and a perseverance that requires dedication and quiet contemplation.

I took another breath, emptying my mind of all thoughts, grateful if even it was just for a moment. The sun had gone down. Just me, the mountain and the stillness that pervaded.

To help you find grace and ease and sink into stillness I invite you to follow these 3 steps.

1. DISCOVER A LITTLE PIECE OF STILLNESS IN NATURE THAT FEELS JUST RIGHT FOR YOU

Being in nature has wonderful benefits to the body, mind and soul. Just listening to the birds and sounds of nature can help you in finding stillness in your life. Being out in nature makes you feel alive and connected to your true essence. It doesn't have to be a long hike into some deep jungle or forest, it could simply be a special space in your own backyard or a walk around the block. Try and take 20 mins of every day to being in nature and feeling the stillness sink into the very core of your being.

2. INNER STILLNESS – DISCOVER MEDITATION

Meditation has been used as a tool for centuries to quieten your mind and find stillness.  Having a practice of meditation allows you to slowly dissolve the ceaseless chatter of thoughts known as the "monkey mind" thus in turn allowing you to access parts of your mind that relax the deeper layers of your consciousness.

With practice and dedication you will be able to cultivate the ability to find your quiet place no matter what is going on in your external environment. Anywhere you need to recharge whether it be on a crowded train, at work, or in your own home, it will start to become a time when you look forward to that inner state of stillness. Experiencing a deeper state of this stillness opens up your life to feel a deeper sense of joy, peace and gratitude.

3. THE ENDLESS BENEFITS OF YOGA - FINDING QUIET IN MOVEMENT

Meditation and Yoga complement each other. Meditation teaches stillness of the mind and Yoga teaches stillness of the body. There are various types of yoga that all hold a wealth of knowledge, most types involve connection with the breath and movement thru asanas ( postures). Yoga is extremely beneficial for your wellbeing, your body and your mind. It is a time for you to show up on your yoga mat no matter what you are feeling and deepen your sense of peace and calm.  It is a time to explore movement in connection to the breath and finding that stillness throughout the practice.

4. TAKE TIME AWAY FROM YOUR BUSY LIFE - GO ON A RETREAT

Joining a yoga retreat can help you easily reach that inner calm that your seeking. Not only will you have time to find some stillness but also plenty of time to explore the world around you, do some yoga, eat nourishing food and get some good sleep. A yoga retreat is the perfect antidote to your busy mind & life. A yoga retreat is the perfect place to get a solid practice of meditation, yoga, nature and stillness.
